Controller

Your first project

Add a project, pick a provider and model, and send your first prompt.

This page walks through the path from a fresh launch to watching an agent work on your code.

Open the app

If you installed a packaged build, launch Controller from Finder, Spotlight, Launchpad, or your Linux app menu. On first launch you'll see the Welcome to Controller screen — pick the backend port (default 4500) and click Continue. See Installation for the details.

If you're running from source, open the Vite URL printed in the terminal (http://localhost:4500 by default).

Add a project

A project is a local directory Controller manages on your behalf.

  1. In the sidebar, click Add a project.
  2. Point it at a local directory — either type the path or use Browse… to pick it with the native file picker.
  3. The project appears in the Projects list in the sidebar.

If the directory lives under a protected folder like ~/Documents or ~/Downloads, macOS may show a privacy prompt the first time Controller reads inside it. See macOS privacy prompts.

Start a session

A session is one conversation with an agent, bound to one worktree in a project.

  1. Select your project and start a new session.
  2. Pick a provider — Anita, Codex, or Claude. (The provider's CLI must be installed and on your PATH; see Installation.)
  3. Pick a model for that provider.

If the provider needs an API key, set it in Settings first — see the Sidebar tour.

Send your first prompt

Type a prompt in the chat input and send it. The streaming UI shows the agent's work as it happens:

  • Text — the agent's natural-language responses.
  • Reasoning — the model's thinking, when the provider exposes it.
  • Tool calls — each command or file operation the agent invokes.
  • Tool results — the output returned to the agent.

Everything streams in over SSE (Server-Sent Events), so you see progress live rather than waiting for the full answer.

Resume later

Sessions persist their full event history to disk, so you can leave and come back. In the sidebar, expand your project and its worktree to find the session, then click it to resume exactly where you left off. See the Sidebar tour for the full layout.
